Volcanoes National Park sits in Rwanda’s northern highlands, part of the same Virunga mountain range shared with Uganda and DR Congo. The park is famous as the research base of primatologist Dian Fossey, and her legacy continues: gorilla families are well habituated, trackers know them by name, and rangers protect them every day.

Trekking is guided, well managed, and limited in numbers. The experience is similar to Uganda in emotional impact, but each country has its own atmosphere. Rwanda offers shorter travel distances, luxury lodges, and a very organized permit system. The backdrop of volcanic cones gives the forest a dramatic, cinematic feel.

Visitors spend one hour with the gorilla families – watching young ones tumbling in the vines, silverbacks watching over the troop, and females feeding in the undergrowth. It feels calm, quiet, and deeply respectful.

Rwanda is not only a gorilla destination. In the east lies Akagera, a savannah park with lions, elephants, buffalo, giraffes, antelopes, and hippos. Conservation efforts have restored the predator population, bringing lions and rhinos back after years of absence. Game drives take place in open country, while boat safaris on Lake Ihema add a quiet, scenic angle to wildlife watching.

Nyungwe National Park protects a vast mountain rainforest filled with primates and birds. Chimpanzee trekking here feels different from Uganda: the forest is higher, colder, and deeply atmospheric. A suspended canopy bridge stretches above the trees, giving guests a rare perspective of the wilderness.
